GTA V playful marketing starts [1]

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 03:09 AM PDT

We have been told not to believe any rumors about Grand Theft Auto 5 until the news shows on the official news wire, although Rockstar are contradicting this warning considering their latest marketing of GTA V. There is a new website and Twitter page kicking-off something called the “Epsilon Program“, which a quick Who IS search reveals Take-Two and Rockstar Games are behind this website, so what does American religion and gaming have in common?

Grand Theft Auto V is behind this playful marketing â€" we have seen viral campaigns for a number of movies and games, and in fact it seems that most new launches start with some fun these days. Don’t believe Rockstar when they say hints towards the impending GTA V release date will only come directly from them, which is clear considering this new website is a silent type of marketing for the next Grand Theft Auto game without a mention on their news wire.

The domain registration shows that Take-Two are behind the new religious website, originally registered 8 years ago, and we can tell it’s for GTA V after a quick look at the testimonials page. The quotes on this page can be seen below and you might notice some hints for GTA V, and the areas these people live in are clearly from the game (San Andreas). You can see the viral website at epsilonprogram.com, although if this isn’t clear enough then when you click any of the links in the navigation you’ll be redirected to the official Rockstar Games domain but the content doesn’t reflect this.

Have a look around this website and let us know what you think about this silent marketing for GTA 5? Do you find this teasing fun, or do you want more direct information from Rockstar in regard to GTA 5? It will be interesting to see what happens throughout the rest of this month and September, especially considering this is the first visible promotion for the next GTA since the trailer many months ago.

At the time of writing there’s nothing official on the release date for GTA 5, and we cannot even point to a launch month, but considering the latest financial results [2] it seems Take-Two need this game more than the fans, which is clear after their recent loss in the millions.

PSN down in US to continue ‘best gaming experience’ [6]

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 12:08 AM PDT

If you live in the US and thought you got off lightly last week with the heavy European PSN maintenance, think again. Sony has revealed that the PSN maintenance is due to go down in America, but luckily only for a few hours.

The good news is that you’ll still be able to play games online, as long as you are signed into your account before hand. At the time of writing, we’re now just past 12am Pacific Time, so the network should be starting to go offline in your area.

According to a brief message from Sony on the US Blog [7] , the period of downtime will last for two hours and should be back up by 2am Pacific Time or 10am UK time for those that plan to get an early gaming session in. Just like the last maintenance update, Sony has said that their reasoning for doing this is so that they can offer you the ‘best gaming experience online possible’.

Xbox 360 owners may have something to say about that though as they continue to enjoy a service which doesn’t encounter maintenance periods at such a severe rate as Sony. Perhaps this is the downside to a free service on PS3 though and it’s going to be interesting to see just what improvements Sony make to their network infrastructure once the PlayStation 4 arrives.

It’s fair to say that we can probably kiss goodbye to the possibility of cross-game chat appearing before the next-gen PS4 is out. Along with the poor web browser, Sony seems content on leaving the PSN as it is for the time being, as when can you remember the last time that a meaningful firmware update came out?

If you can’t sign into the PSN at the moment, relax as it should be back up within two hours.

Nexus 7 tips and tricks on Jelly Bean [10]

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 10:27 PM PDT

How are you getting on with your Nexus 7 [11] so far? Due to the huge demand for the device, some of you have probably only just received your lovely new tablet in the post. Google perhaps senses this too and they’ve provided a quick video offering some handy Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tips for the Nexus 7.

After watching the video, we’ve concluded that it isn’t going to be too appealing for those users who are already exploring the inner depths of the device via custom tools from places like the XDA Developer Forums. Instead, this is more of a introduction video for those that may be having difficulty navigating around the device upon first use.

The video shows how you can use Face Unlock to unlock your Nexus 7, but also a new Face Unlock feature which lets you unlock by simply ‘blinking’ â€" the wonders of technology. There’s another look at how to bring up the Google Now interface, the company’s new personal assistant which is arguably even more advanced than Siri [12] .

You can input acute searches such as searching for a specific resturant in your town and like Siri will be able to in iOS 6, Google Now also has a sophisticated instant sports result feature as well. Google Now is definitely one of the highlights of the Nexus 7 and most of you will probably agree with us that it brings up a lot more successful searches compared to Siri at the moment.

Finally, the video gives you a look how the new Jelly Bean notifications menu works, allowing you to pinch to expand the notifications you want to keep and swipe away ones that are not important. Check it out below and let us know how you are getting on with the Nexus 7 so far.

Are you rooted already?

iPhone 5 connector may be MagSafe like MacBook Air [16]

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 09:26 PM PDT

It now looks very likely that Apple has decided to banish the veteran 30-pin dock connector from their upcoming iPhone 5 [17] smartphone. The 30-pin format has been adopted on a whole collection of Apple mobile products, but now evidence is mounting that the new iPhone is going to feature a smaller dock connector.

Today we have some more information to give you on this, as new rumors are again suggesting that Apple may turn to a MagSafe style connector for the iPhone 5. Owners of Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops will be very familiar with how the connector looks, but for those that aren’t â€" we could be seeing a magnetic charging solution for the iPhone at long last.

We really hope it happens too as we would definitely prefer a MagSafe connector over a standard 30-pin one. An article published [18] by iLounge this week claims that Apple in actual fact will use an 8-pin connector, as opposed to a 16-pin or 19-pin connector that has been rumored in the past.

The barrage of iPhone 5 component images have already shown us Apple’s smaller connector port in the flesh, while a previous article we wrote here [19] suggests that there will definitely be an adapter available to connect up old iOS accessories to the new iPhone 5 connector.

Moving to MagSafe seems like a logical step to us, so hopefully we find out some further information on this. Would you be happy with a magnetic charging dock, or would you prefer Apple to offer a different solution entirely? How does a design similar to the image above look to you?
