Capcom’s PS Vita mistake with Monster Hunter 4 [1]

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 01:58 AM PDT

It looks like the wait for a Monster Hunter game on the PS Vita is going to go on for quite some time. Nintendo has just put up a new trailer for Monster Hunter 4 [2] , confirming that the game is going to be exclusive on the Nintendo 3DS.

It goes without saying that this is obviously a major head-scratcher for those wondering what Capcom are up to and why they continue to be silent with regards to bringing their popular franchise to Sony’s new handheld. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd almost single handedly carried Japanese software and hardware PSP sales in Japan, but for some reason they are still not willing to extend the love to the PS Vita â€" six months on from the EU launch, or a staggering 9 months on from the Japan launch.

We take nothing away from Nintendo 3DS owners though as this is no doubt a huge coup if Monster Hunter 4 really is staying exclusive to the 3DS. It doesn’t make a lot of sense from Capcom’s point of view and we do wonder with all these under the table exclusivity agreements going on, if Nintendo has managed to prize Capcom away from Sony for exclusive rights on Monster Hunter.

For some bizarre reason, there isn’t even an English Monster Hunter game available in North America yet either. Right now, you can pick up an HD remaster of Monster Hunter Portable 3 on the PS3, but it is still the Japanese version and pretty much useless unless you have a good grasp of the language.

Saying that, only a Japanese version of Monster Hunter 4 has only been announced for the 3DS too, so perhaps we won’t even get an English version next year at the same time as when the Japanese version launches in Spring 2013. Are Capcom making a huge mistake in 1) not offering this game on PS Vita and 2) not putting the effort in to bring the franchise to EU and NA?

On a side note, those graphics featured in the trailer could do with a lot of improvement â€" let’s hope that it’s just an early build. If you have a PS Vita, let us know your opinions on the treatment you are receiving with regards to Monster Hunter.

Black Ops 2 Nuketown 2025 map confusion [5]

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 12:06 AM PDT

Last week we told you that a remake of the popular Nuketown map was coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 [6] . Now, Activision has made things official, posting a Nuketown 2025 FAQ and listing permutations for those who have already pre-ordered the game.

If you didn’t already know, Nuketown 2025 is going to be a free download for those that pre-order the game at participating retailers. At the moment, there seems to be some confusion as to whether those who have already pre-ordered the game will still get the map or not.

Activision hasn’t exactly made this crystal clear in their FAQ either, but it looks like you’ll still be getting a download code regardless of where you got the game from. The good news is that Nuketown 2025 won’t be exclusive to the Xbox 360 either â€" you can get it for free by pre-ordering the PS3 or PC version as well.

Going back to the FAQ [7] though, we’ve noticed that Activision seems to have contradicted themselves somewhat. In their first point they clearly state the following for those that have already ordered the game:

”If you already pre-ordered the game then you're all set, and you will be able to download the bonus map when Call of Duty: Black Ops II launches.”

However, if you scroll down the FAQ to the last question, they say something completely different in relation to exactly the same question. If you have already pre-ordered the game, Activision say this at the bottom:

”No need to worry. Those who have already pre-ordered will be able to purchase a launch unit of Call of Duty: Black Ops II that will include the Nuketown 2025 downloadable bonus map.”

What exactly does ‘purchasing a launch unit’ mean? That sounds pretty sneaky in our opinion, when really they could have made things a lot more easier for fans to understand. We’re guessing that you’ll get the download code for Nuketown 2025 regardless, so perhaps there’s no need to worry about this dodgy wording.

Have you already ordered Black Ops 2?

Solid GTA V signals towards release [11]

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 11:46 PM PDT

When Grand Theft Auto V finally gets a release date there will be a massive number of gamers saying goodbye to their social life, and looking at some recent news it looks like that time is almost here. Throughout the year we have heard little from Rockstar and most articles have been trying to piece together the facts, but in the last week alone we had our strongest signals that Rockstar are about to give us some solid GTA V news at last.

Last week we saw a video tease for Gamescom that included a couple of seconds from the first GTA V trailer, which you can see here [12] if you missed it, and as you can see from gamer comments most people loved this news thanks to it being something solid at last. While E3 didn’t bring anything related to Grand Theft Auto, it seems that Gamescom will be very different and should deliver trailer 2 if the above tease is anything to go by.

If the above news is not enough to show gamers they’ll be finally getting some solid details at Gamescom, then hearing official comments from someone at Rockstar support could offer another hint. Most of our readers that check for “GTA 5 news” everyday would already know about this, and if you haven’t then see the screenshot below. The person that contacted Rockstar about the GTA V release obviously didn’t speak English very well, but thanks to them we got some signals towards the plans being made and what state GTA V is at right now.

The most important clue we saw had been the comment on “solving issues“, which means if they are focused on this for the “upcoming game” then Rockstar should be in a testing stage. If they are focused on glitches that could “impede on your fun” then this news would mean a lot more is very likely to come at Gamescom. The timing is right if they are in testing and this clue only supports the tease in the Gamescom teaser video [13] .

Hearing the development for Grand Theft Auto V takes “little over 4 years” is another signal, which most of us already understand as fans of GTA, but obviously the person that contacted support doesn’t understand that development would have started around 2008. This means Rockstar support are telling us GTA V should release a little longer than 4 years after development starts, so if this prediction is correct then we are looking at 2012, or early 2013.

With so much focus on Max Payne right now you should expect some solid news at Gamescom and an early release in 2013, and most gamers have already commented along the lines of “Let them take as long as it takes“, so most fans will be happy to wait until early next year. It’s also obvious that Rockstar don’t need to worry about creating hype, although it happens naturally by keeping silent anyway, and GTA 5 is almost certain to be one of the biggest games for years.

These two clues from the last week are as near to news you’ll get, and if you believe them then we pretty much know what Rockstar are planning to do in the coming months. Share your thoughts in the comments.

Wii U not tempted by online subscriptions [16]

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 11:02 PM PDT

We have some excellent news for those of you planning to pick up a Nintendo Wii U later this year. Although Sony and Microsoft seem to be slugging it out over exclusivity and subscription factors at the moment, it looks like Nintendo has opted against making their upcoming console the subject of paid subscriptions for online play.

After the company announced paid DLC plans for the likes of New Super Mario Bros 2 on the 3DS, a first for the company, many had feared that they may be tempted to extend these plans to their upcoming Wii U console. However, during a recent shareholders meeting, president Satoru Iwata has given some interesting comments [17] that should make a lot of you happy.

In his opinion, be believes that making Wii U users pay to connect to the Nintendo Network ‘isn’t the best approach’. He actually thinks that software and hardware sales will be more successful by keeping it a free service, which is obviously great news for those of you fearing extra costs.

Since the Wii remains free at the moment, it would have been a bold step for Nintendo anyway, to change everything into a premium subscription for their next console. It works for Microsoft and Xbox Live obviously, but Nintendo feels like it isn’t the right move for them so they’re sticking to what they know best.

It will be interesting to see how that Gold Rush DLC mode works out for Nintendo. If it is really successful, don’t be surprised if it opens the floodgates for countless other DLC platforms on first party 3DS and Wii U based games. For now though, online is going to be free on the Wii U and long may this continue when Sony and Microsoft unleash the PS4 and Xbox 720.

Skyrim 1.6 patch for PS3 understandably late [20]

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 09:58 AM PDT

Around 3 weeks have passed since we heard about the Skyrim 1.6 patch and still no sign of the PlayStation 3 update, which has caused some PS3 owners to feel they always get left in the dark. There are a number of reasons why some gamers desperately want Skyrim patch 1.6, and if not for the mounted combat and crossbow [21] , it would obviously be for the bug fixes.

If you have seen the full patch notes for Xbox 360 and PC then you could also see a quest that has been fixed with this update, or even a bug you are experiencing right now when playing Skyrim. While we understand the frustration it is also easy to understand why Bethesda are making PS3 gamers wait, which is partly to do with the Dawnguard DLC not yet released on the PS3, although the PC has the 1.6 patch, and also to do with the cost of launching updates to games consoles. If Microsoft didn’t have a timed exclusive with the Skyrim Dawnguard DLC, then PS3 players would’ve had the new patch by now.

You will need patch 1.6 before being able to play the Skyrim DLC, so it is coming and considering you will need a patch for DLC trophies, we’d expect everything to be provided within one update later on this month. Bethesda would understandably rather launch one patch rather than two, so sadly this also means an extra wait for not only the first DLC but also the next patch. The release date has not been confirmed but you can expect the next PS3 patch from mid-July onwards.

The good news is some users are expecting a few issues with Skyrim patch 1.6, so PS3 owners might get a slightly enhanced version with more bug fixes, which is another reason not to think the current Xbox 360 patch notes will be the same for PS3 owners.

If you have Skyrim on the PS3, how do you feel about waiting longer for patch 1.6?

Overkilling the iPhone 5 connector [24]

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 09:05 AM PDT

Is it really possible to shoot too high when adding better technology inside the iPhone 5, especially when we talk about the new iPhone connector rumored to release with the 6th generation device? Normally we would say improved features are always welcomed, but when it comes to the idea of Thunderbolt on an iPhone 5 some people think this would be overkill.

This iPhone news website [25] states that the smaller hole seen in leaked iPhone 5 photos, which are not confirmed as authentic, could be a Thunderbolt connector rather than a microUSB port as first thought. While we would love to see the Thunderbolt port added to the iPhone 5 for that extra speed, it’s also true that most users would never need such a large speed boost.

In our opinion the iPhone 5 is likely to launch with a new connector to meet standards in Europe, and also to make a change that has been expected for some time, which would provide the iPhone with a common connector standard found on a massive range of phones. The idea of a Thunderbolt port also raises other problems with cost, power, and the need to transfer large file sizes by cable often enough.

The image below gives you an idea of how fast Thunderbolt is, and while faster is better in our books it is still hard to grasp this change coming to a phone considering Apple’s push towards iCloud. Apple has improved iOS to help users share and save files wirelessly with cloud computing, so to try and promote the connector again with more speed seems like a step backwards not forwards.

If Apple changed the iPhone 5 connector, what would you want to see in its place? Something faster like Thunderbolt or a well-known standard like microUSB? There will be a number of ways for Apple to make a new connector backwards compatible, and one way can be seen here [26] .
