Palm Beach County is putting storm preparation tools in residents' palms.

A newly launched app helps residents prepare for disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. The free iPhone [1] and Android [2] app, called the Disaster Assessment and Resource Tool App, or DART, informs residents of what storm surge inundation zone they live in and provides current evacuation and shelter information.

Residents can also use DART to report damages to their homes or businesses immediately after a disaster, which helps the county's Division of Emergency Management identify the most-affected areas, said Rob Shelt, the division's assistant operations manager.
