iOS 6 update for Apple TV enhances icons [1]

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:40 AM PDT

When we start looking towards the iOS 6 update for Apple TV there are a few features most of us have in-mind already, but one enhancement that most of us agree on is the need for native Apple TV apps, which has eluded users to date. Today we have some details on a slight change coming to iOS 6 on Apple TV, and this involves the layout of default apps.

The latest beta of iOS 6 is showing the ability to customize the layout of icons on Apple TV, which some of you might have wanted in a different order but lacked the ability to move them in the past. When we use our Apple TV there are a number of default apps we don’t use, and some we value more like Netflix, so this change will allow us to put the most important icons first. If you own an iPhone or iPad then you are used to this reorder feature, so it seems like a natural update that should have been there from the start, but we guess is coming now considering the growing list of default apps.

We expect this new icon feature to be enhanced before iOS 6 for Apple TV is released to the public, although you can see a video below this article, which shows how it works in the current beta. Take a look and let us know if this is something you would use on your Apple TV?

Apple’s next major iOS update is shaping up nicely and with each beta update, beta 2 released [2] a few days ago, we get to see new features and the software getting fine-tuned. Recent improvements include Yelp check-ins [3] on the new Apple maps for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Some layout improvements for iOS 6 are also signaling a way [4] to support the new screen size for iPhone 5, which is expected this Fall. There are still some issues users are having with the current iOS 5.0.2 [5] , and this means a few more updates under the iOS 5 build are yet to come.

Do you welcome the ability to move icons on Apple TV?

Skyrim Dawnguard visual review [9]

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:39 AM PDT

As most of you are well aware, the first expansion pack for Skyrim is now available on the Xbox 360 exclusively. Dawnguard is proving to be well worth the wait [10] and if you haven’t bought it yet, we have a selection of excellent videos for you to watch.

At the moment, we’re busy getting stuck into Dawnguard as well â€" the expansion is rather addictive wouldn’t you agree? Earlier this week we told you how to actually activate the first mission by visiting Fort Dawnguard [11] and just hours ago we gave you some tips on solving the Dimhollow Cavern puzzle [12] that you’ll come across later on.

If it is just video reviews you are after though â€" you’ve come to the right place. Dawnguard costs 1600MSP or $20 and many are still wondering on whether the new content is worth the price or not. CVG has posted a decent visual review of their general opinions on the expansion, while we have a feeling a lot of you will appreciate this detailed walkthrough on the new Vampire Lord as well which we’ve included below.

On a more controversial note, the visual review provided by TheGamerSheep actually implies that they were a bit disappointed with Dawnguard, with the main reason being that it only took them 7-8 hours to complete. Perhaps this was a bit of speed run though without exactly exploring every corner fully â€" also don’t forget that Bethesda claimed numerous times that Dawnguard would add at least 10-20 hours of new gameplay content to Skyrim.

Have you played through Dawnguard long enough to compile your own little mini review, or are you too busy roaming around your new environment with a 500 gold midget armored troll? That little guy is a boss isn’t he? You can purchase him from Gunmar if you’re interested, although you may prefer to enlist the services of free deathhounds as a Vampire Lord â€" more on that later.

Check out the videos below and give us your early impressions on Dawnguard. A lot of people are saying it is not worth $20, but do you disagree?

MW3 Terminal map still exclusive, PS3 release date wait [15]

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:16 PM PDT

The majority of MW3 players are probably aware that a remake of Terminal [16] is on the way to the game, but you may be confused as to whether the map will be arriving on all platforms at the same time, or if it will be subject to the same exclusivity shenanigans as usual.

Well, we have some additional information on this for you now and it is mixed news depending on which platform you are playing on. Terminal is on the way soon, but a few Tweets by Infinity Ward head Mark Rubin has confirmed that the map will be releasing on Elite first, and PS3 players will again have to wait a month to play it after Xbox 360.

Rubin specifically responded to a user question asking whether PS3 had to wait again for the map, telling him that although he wasn’t 100% sure, PS3 users will get it 30 days later. Has the excitement now turned to disappointment on PS3 and PC, in finding out that you now have to wait even longer to get your hands on arguably the best map from Modern Warfare 2?

Considering that the wounds are still fresh from the lack of Dawnguard on PS3 [17] , we have a feeling that PS3 users will be well used to getting shafted like this. At least Terminal is coming to the game for free though, so at least you won’t have to pay anything for it when it finally does arrive.

So there we have it â€" expect Terminal to land very soon on Xbox 360 Elite, and then 30 days later for PS3 users. Let us know your thoughts on the wait for Terminal.

iPhone 5 experiences 4S deja vu [20]

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:09 PM PDT

Shortly after iPhone owners upgraded to the 4S model a growing number of them experienced battery life problems, which affected thousands of people but also just as many had no issues at all. The problem had been so widespread that Apple delivered a fix for the battery with an iOS 5 update, although it took a couple of updates before battery life had been fixed for the majority of people.

Over the last few days we’ve heard that the iPhone 5 is experiencing battery quality problems during production, although this is based on a rumor from this article [21] , and at first this seemed like déjà vu considering we had battery issues first hand with our 4S model last year, but this time it is problems with the battery hardware itself, according to a Chinese news website (Sina.com).

Apple are known for their high standards in the supply line and they take a tough approach on this thanks to past accusations of cheap labor [22] , and this is shown with this latest rumor. It is being suggested that only 30 percent of the current volume of batteries produced for the iPhone 5 meet standards, which means another vendor has had to help out if Apple are to deliver a timely release date for the iPhone 5.

It does seem strange that we hear about these battery problems at the same time as early release rumors, which reports from ifeng.com state a release date could land as soon as August 2012. It’s good to remember that these sources could have insider information, but the news should be classed as speculation until Apple confirms the details. It would be unlike Apple to launch the iPhone 5 in August, but then the last couple of years have seen Apple become more unpredictable than normal.

The iPhone 5 looks set for a massive redesign and the expected MagSafe 19-pin port [23] did worry some iPhone owners at first, although a concept of an adaptor [24] shows how most compatibility problems can be solved. NFC [25] is another feature almost certain to land on the iPhone 5, although one fake commercial [26] shows how a future iPhone could look but we’d expect this to be many generations away.

Mario Balotelli celebration in FIFA 13 [30]

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 10:07 PM PDT

Football fans over the world are probably in shock right now as Italy and Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli sent his country through to the finals of Euro 2012 to play Spain, shocking tournament favorites Germany in the process.

The main talking point during the game though, was not the amazing second goal that Balotelli scored, it was another of his ‘non-celebrations’ after doing so which has everyone buzzing at the moment on social network sites.

Fans are now begging EA to put Mario’s latest non-celebration into the upcoming FIFA 13 game and it would obviously be a logical move for EA to do since it would then boost sales having his celebration in the game. His non-celebrations are becoming very famous now and it is a clear characteristic of the player â€" just like Ronaldo’s free kick taking.

Imagine playing with your friends and being able to perform the Mario ‘hulk out’ celebration after you scored, that would be pretty amazing if EA made that possible. Just to show you the demand for this right now, just type ‘Balotelli celebration’ into Twitter â€" you’ll see that there are already several requests to see this in FIFA 13, so EA shouldn’t really ignore this.

If they really want to be sneaky, they could include it as a pre-order incentive although some wheeling and dealing with Mario Balotelli may have to take place first if EA are going to pull it off. Do you want to see the Mario Balotelli non-celebration in FIFA 13? Let’s get EA’s attention folks.

Samsung struggling with Galaxy S3 stock [33]

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 12:14 PM PDT

Some of our readers might be expecting no problems with finding Galaxy S3 stock, although Samsung has officially stated that they’re having a tough time meeting the consumer demand for the latest Galaxy smartphone. Current sales expectations for the two months after the Galaxy S3 release is 10 million units, and Samsung believe they have enough stock to meet this demand but it has been a struggle,

Europeans have been enjoying Samsung’s Galaxy S3 since May, although the flagship phone is only just launching in the United States, which has seen Verizon have problems getting the handset to their customers soon enough [34] . It’s also worth pointing out that the 10 million units Samsung has talked about in this article [35] are those shipped to carriers and not sent to consumers, although Samsung expect at least 10 million to be sold within two months.

Samsung also expects the Galaxy S3 to be in 147 countries by the end of next month, which they hope gives the company an early advantage over the iPhone 5 that should launch this Fall with iOS 6. The worlds biggest mobile phone maker is Samsung, ahead of Nokia since 2011, but Samsung hope to overtake Apple as the biggest Smartphone maker and should reach 200 million smartphone sales in 2012, which is double their previous year.

Have you had any problems finding stock of the Samsung Galaxy S3, or are you waiting for another phone like the iPhone 5? You might want to read about some doubts with Gorilla Glass 2 after this Galaxy S3 drop test [36] .

GTA V reality without relationships [40]

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:39 AM PDT

One thing we have loved about most Grand Theft Auto games is the open world environment mixed with small steps towards reality, which improve with each release and are likely to deliver the best balance yet in GTA V. You can expect the police to be better armed with tear gas, riot shields, and more to make the next game more authentic.

Some things from real life don’t belong in Grand Theft Auto V â€" it’s great making the open world environment more lifelike, but there are certain features we would hate to see in the next installment and this includes having a relationship. We’re sure most gamers will agree with us that the Skyrim-type marriages would not work in GTA V, but this has not stopped some gamers posting on forums asking for these features, and the thought of an in-depth relationship in GTA is almost laughable.

Could you imagine having a Skyrim-level relationship within GTA V? This forum [41] is touching on this very subject, asking if girlfriends should be included in the next GTA, and the replies give you a taste of what the gamer wants to do inside GTA V, which couldn’t be further away from buying a house, settling down, and then having kids. These gamers would much rather go to a strip club and dance with a girl, which could then lead to some one night stand action if allowed thanks to an 18+ game rating.

We’ve played Skyrim for well over 500 hours and enjoyed buying a house and getting married, but this doesn’t belong in GTA V in our opinion, and we cant quite understand what some gamers are thinking when they want this level of reality within Grand Theft Auto. It’s fair to say that the type of gangster you see in this game could have a family, but most people are not going to want this experience within the next game, how could it be fun to have Skyrim-level relationships in GTA 5?

Rockstar please give us car customization, more hardcore police, and even better how about another trailer or the release date soon, but you can forget about certain aspects of reality like relationships. It seems for now the silence is some sort of marketing tactic [42] , and constant news about Max Payne 3 shows that Rockstar are not ready to give us more on GTA 5 at this time.

Skyrim Dawnguard Dimhollow quest and Cavern puzzle [45]

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 06:34 AM PDT

During our Skyrim Dawnguard review we’ll feature some articles and videos from our journey through the first DLC. Once you reach Fort Dawnguard you will be given another quest to find out what the vampires are seeking, and this will take you to the Dimhollow Crypt and after fighting a few enemies within the Crypt you will reach the Cavern and a puzzle.

It’s worth pointing out that you might not want to take on this quest if you have only just hit level 10, which is exactly where we were at the start of this quest on the Xbox 360. The PS3 version has had over 500 hours of our time and as such we have maxed out many of the skill trees, although because the Xbox 360 got the Skyrim Dawnguard DLC one month early we decided to start again on this platform.

Low skills makes the Dimhollow quest much harder â€" just starting Skyrim and downloading the Dawnguard DLC will make things a lot harder if you have not climbed the skill tress. We found this out on the Xbox 360 thanks to having none of the perks and enhanced weapons on our PS3 version of the game, which has made enemies we encounter much harder to defeat. We suggest you climb the skill trees, or at least find some more powerful weapons before attempting Dawnguard, although you can start the Skyrim DLC as soon as you reach level 10 with a Cross Bow but this is nothing compared to having many hours of upgraded skills.

Solving the Dimhollow Cavern puzzle â€" once you defeat the challenges on the way to the Dimhollow Cavern you will be met with a puzzle, which some of our readers might get stuck on. You can see a short video below that shows you how to solve the puzzle and get through the Dimhollow quest. We have also included three more videos that give a good walkthrough of the Dimhollow Crypt.

What level were you at when you started the Dimhollow quest within Dawnguard? One other tip to making sure you don’t die through this quest is to take plenty of healing potions with you, which will make everything that much easier.
