April is almost over? When did that happen. If your school days are like mine, then they are flying by. With that being said here is a quick recap of some pretty darn good apps you can use with your iPhone. Click on the image to get my quick review.
Do you love Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin? Then Silent Film Director is definitely an app for you. A lot of student films run into the very common problem of lousy audio. Since boom mics are not quite a standard in the classroom, this problem ain’t going anywhere. So instead of constantly wrestling with getting good audio by jamming an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad in the face of those you’re filming, why not circumvent the sound altogether? This is where Silent Film Director comes in. It will record the film (without audio obviously) and allow you to add different styles like the 20’s or 60’s home video. You can also add multiple clips together, add music, transitions, and titles. It’s a great and well made app and it’ll force your students to really think about how to effectively communicate using only images. It really gets them to plan out their films as opposed to just hitting the record button and hamming it up. You can download it for 99 cents here [1] .
Sketch Nation Studio is a free app for iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. You can make an either vertical jumping game or a side scrolling game. You get to create the characters, create the enemies, create the background, chose the music and much more. It’s a lot of fun and to make a good and entertaining game takes a bit more thought than one might think. This is a great idea for students to get them to create something, try it out, edit it, try it again. You can download it here [2] .
Rooaaaarrrr! The Dinosaur app from the American Museum of Natural History has a great app that will give you a lot of great info on dinosaurs. When you open the app, you see this giant mosaic of a dinosaur. When you zoom into the mosaic and select an individual picture, it will give you information about that particular dino. The app also gives detailed stories on some of the more famous dinosaurs explaining where they were found, by whom, how, etc. It is actually pretty interesting to see the story behind finding, excavating and studying these beasts of the past. This app is great for all ages and if you love dinosaurs, go ahead and treat yourself. It’s free and you can get it here [3] .
The default camera app on the iPhone is pretty good (and made even better with the iOS 5), but to really leverage all the power you’ll need a third party app. I was using Camera+ for a while but it seems a little too slow to load and they give me a little too many options when editing my photo. Enter Camera Awesome. This app is pretty powerful, very easy to use. In a lot of ways it is more streamlined than Camera+ and you can easily toggle between video and still photography. Oh yeah, it loads very fast, is very easy to use and is free! There are some features that you must pay to unlock, but the standard app is pretty darn powerful.
