Gormally To Offer Free Apps for Broadcasters

The iPhone, iPad and Android apps provide proprietary software that will let broadcasters control content delivery based on a user’s respective DMA by using the device’s GPS position relative to Nielsen’s 210 television U.S. markets.

Gormally Broadcast Media announced today that it will provide its iPhone, iPad and Android apps in an open-source platform starting June 30.

“The open source code will allow any television station or other information provider (including radio and print publications) to have its own smart device platform free of charge,” said GBM owner, John J. Gormally. Gormally is also the owner of ABC-Fox affiliate WGGB Springfield, Mass., as well as BusinessWest Magazine, a bi-weekly business journal.

The apps provide proprietary software that will let broadcasters control content delivery based on a user’s respective DMA (Designated Marketing Area) by using the device’s GPS position relative to Nielsen’s 210 television markets across the U.S.

Gormally says this technology “should remove the concerns of many content providers regarding licensed programming being viewed outside any smart-device user’s respective DMA where such programming is exclusively licensed for viewing by any particular television station.”

The smart device apps for the Apple iPhone and iPad are currently available for download at Apple’s app store by searching for wggb. The Android version will be available for download later this month.

GBM’s copyrighted app offers local news and video, weather updates, local sports, national entertainment updates, a Facebook and Twitter interface, special programming sections, local traffic reporting, among other mobile offerings, and live streaming.

The free apps will be continually updated as new features become available.

“It’s a win for everyone,” said Gormally. “Small and large broadcasters will get a state-of-the-art smart app at no charge, with GBM’s business model based solely on retaining a small amount of available ad-serving inventory for each licensee.

“What we are trying to build here is a national platform standard for broadcast television stations, very similar to ClearChannel’s IHeartRadio, but significantly more robust. Anyone using our apps would be hard pressed to find better ones out there. They really are revolutionary. I encourage broadcasters to download the wggb app on their iPhone or iPad and give them a test drive,” he added.
