Snapguide Makes Anyone a Guide

This weekend I’m going to learn how to make tofu. I’m not going to take a class, or use a cookbook, I’m going to follow instructions from a new iPhone and iPad application called Snapguide [1] .

Snapguide, a free application and Web site that became available to the public Thursday, allows people to create a guide, for just about anything using videos, photos and words on a mobile device.

Some of the guides currently available include, “How to Wear a Scarf 5 Ways,” “How to Sous Vide Chicken at Home” and “How to Make an Aerium,” a kind of terrarium. In some instances, the guides are done by professionals who specialize in a specific field, in others, someone with a hobby expounds on something they love.

There are plenty of competing online guides on the Web, including eHow, yet Snapguide feels different, as it is created on a mobile device and the story is told through a beautiful and simple interface. The app is available for iOS devices [2] .

Snapguide was created by Daniel Raffel, a former Yahoo engineer who managed the Yahoo Pipes program, and Steve Krulewitz, who previously worked for Google on the Google Chrome Web browser.  The company received $2 million in funding last year [3] from a small group of investors.

Now if you will excuse me, I’m about to go macerate some soybeans [4] .
