The iPhone made its debut in June 2007. One year later, in July 2008, Apple launched the official App Store, the ultimate source of programs for the iPhone.
For iPhone owners, 2008 may seem like a long time ago, but itâs only been three years. Whatâs most interesting to me about the iPhone is the thought that neither consumers nor developers have yet worked out what standards and norms they want in the app ecosystem. Sure, Apple has its own set of rules, some of them quite strict, about the process for getting apps to market, but in terms of what consumers are willing to buy and how much theyâre willing to pay, I think weâre still in uncharted water.
There are now well over 250,000 apps available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and, surprisingly, many of the best are free.
The following list showcases our pick of the 10 best free iPhone apps, and includes iPhone applications for social networking, travel, news, photography, productivity and more.
If your top free iPhone apps arenât covered, tell us all about them in the comments.

1. Facebook
Once an ugly duckling, but now â" as of version 3 â" a social-network-aware swan, Facebook is a triumph. The revised grid-based âhome screensâ provide speedy access to regularly visited sections (news feed, notifications, and so on) and pages, and the experience is such that it in many ways beats the browser version.
2. Gorillacam
Pretty much from nowhere, Gorillacam arrived in December 2009 from the creators of the Gorillapod tripods. It mashes together a slew of features to hugely improve an iPhoneâs camera (timer, multi-shot, spirit-level, on-screen grid, âpress anywhereâ capture), meaning you can bin a half-dozen standalone apps that offer similar things.
3. Wikipanion
The Wikipedia website works fine on iPhones, but a dedicated app is a better bet. Wikipanion is a freebie which gives you quick access to article sections, in-article search, viewing options, bookmarking, and the ability to tweet about whatever odd fact youâve just unearthed. Also, wonderfully, there are no ads.
4. Kindle
Amazonâs e-book business doesnât require the use of the companyâs Kindle e-reader if youâve got an iPhone â" it just requires the free Kindle app. With it, users can purchase books straight from Amazonâs book store and read them right in the app. Even better, all the books you purchase are downloaded from Amazonâs digital locker stored online, so you can use the same Kindle account on multiple devices, including an actual Kindle reader, an iPad or an Android device. The app also keeps track of your progress through your books over all your
5. Dropbox
Plenty of apps exist for transferring content between your computer and your device, and you often need an iphone transfer coupon codes [1] to help you transfer apps between your computer and your device.but Dropbox is free and easier to use than most of its contemporaries. Dump files you want to sync in a folder on your computer and Dropbox for your device will enable you to access them, download them for offline viewing, and, in many cases, view them.
6. Comics
In all honesty, Comics is a little awkward compared to using it on an iPad, but you wonât find a better comics experience on an iPhone. The app is free, as are dozens of downloadable comics â" and once you run out of those, many more are available to buy. Reading works on a frame-by-frame automated âzoomâ basis, and is surprisingly usable.
7. Skype
Itâs imperfect and annoyingly lacks push notifications, but Skype is still an essential download. The interface is pleasingly simple and usable, enabling anyone with a Skype account to make free calls to other Skype users and cheap calls to anywhere in the world. If youâre on Pay and Go, this is particularly handy, but the app also enables iPod touch users to utilise their devices for calls.
8. Movies
Although some aspects of cinema listings app Movies are disappointingly US-centric (notably regarding details on upcoming movies and DVDs), it succeeds where it matters. Select a film and the app figures out where youâre located, lists nearby cinemas, and displays times your chosen film is showing. Efficiency can be further increased by pinning favourite cinemas to the top of the list. But if you want to watch movies download from itunes on other device, you have to remove drm [2] first.
9. TonePad
Virtual pianos and guitars are all very well, but purely digital musical toys are more suited to Apple handhelds. TonePad is the best of them, using a grid-based interface that enables you to turn notes on and off and compose pleasing and harmonious loops; your creations can be edited, saved and uploaded to share with other users.
10. Instagram
The winner of Appleâs coveted âbest app of 2011â³ award, Instagram is a huge hit which has revolutionized sharing photos via iPhone and iPad. While the regular camera on your iPhone does a decent job, Instagram helps spruce-up your images by applying lots of cool filters and lens effects to give your images a unique look and feel. But what makes Instagram a success is its sharing capabilities. Once youâre happy with your retro-looking shot, itâs easy to upload it and it share it quickly with friends. Instagram makes the whole process simple and seamless, offering unlimited uploads for iPhone users who love to document their day with pictures.
