The number of mobile applications being downloaded is nothing short of staggering.
New numbers [1] from mobile-ad firm Fiksu show that the top 200 free iPhone apps in the Apple App Store were downloaded at a pace of 5.65 million per day. Itâs the first month that the number has broken the 5 million/day mark, representing a 15 percent increase over October and an 83 percent hike compared to a year ago.
Now consider the fact that this only takes into account 200 apps in the store â" 200 apps that are all free. it doesnât consider any other apps, free or paid. it also excludes apps for Appleâs tablet, the iPad. And it doesnât take into account the millions of apps being downloaded from the Android Market or any other mobile app store.
Appleâs App Store numbers dipped just a bit in September before the debut of the iPhone 4S, but have been climbing rapidly since.
"As expected, and as weâve seen before with new device launches, new ownersâ enthusiasm is high and their appetite for app discovery and engagement is strong," the report says. "This bears out in the numbers with daily app downloads hitting a new, all-time record peak reflecting heightened competition for rank in the Apple App Store. Additionally, the rapid adoption of iOS 5 â" and corresponding app updates â" played a key role in this continued escalation in November."
As phone activations jump again during the holiday season, look for Decemberâs app downloads to be even bigger when all is said and done.
