There are links to disaster information websites, important telephone numbers to know and how-to videos.

When disaster strikes, the city of Cupertino wants its iPhone- and iPad-using residents to have critical safety information literally in their pocket. The city has launched Ready 95014, a free downloadable app that acts like a Rolodex of resources anyone can use in the event of an emergency.

The simple app is rooted in the belief that an informed public is a safe public. Ready 95014 is made up of a series of menus that give tips on what to do during certain types of emergencies as well as what to do to better prepare for such an emergency.

"We have really been trying to get all this information into the hands of our residents," said Nidhi Mathur, a city web specialist who helped design the app. "A lot of people think they are prepared, but there is a lot going on when you are in panic mode."

Disasters covered include earthquakes, pandemics and different kinds of fires such as wildfires and cooking fires. Ready 95014 comes equipped with more than a dozen readiness videos that walk viewers through different disaster scenarios, as well as short how-to videos.

Some videos show how to use a fire extinguisher, how to turn off electricity, how to properly secure furniture and how to get drinkable water from a water heater. One six-minute video shows how to perform a

CPR technique that does not require certification.

Ready 95014 lets users set up a list of out-of-area contacts and use a checklist of emergency supplies. The app has a map to all the city ARCs, which are the city's emergency reporting stations and emergency supply caches in the community.

There is also information and links to join Alert SCC, a county-wide automated system that has the capacity to send thousands of text and voice messages within minutes to users. The service can send out critical information during an emergency to various types of devices.

The app has a link to stream Radio Cupertino 1670 AM, the city radio station that will provide continuous information during a disaster.

Ready 95014 launched in late-October and is available only for iPhone and iPad users. The app is available through the iTunes app store.
