Everyone’s probably seen the video of that guy who took a photo of himself every day for like, three years or some crazy amount of time, for some art experiment he was doing. I always thought it would be fun to do, but I never did it because ultimately it’s more trouble than it’s worth. You may forget to do it consistently from day to day, or when you put it together things don’t line up like you want them to, or you just bored and move onto something less time-intensive. But now we have Watch Me Change. It’s one of the best free apps [1] for creating time-lapse photographs and video. Finally, some guy’s quirky photo habit is available to everyone who wants to record long-term changes in their life.
The Watch Me Change app comes in a few different versions, but basically they’re all the same concept. You can set a timer to remind you to take a photo around the same time every day (or every week, or whatever time span you want). It also uses ghost imaging from the previous photos so it’s super easy to keep everything lined up. At any point in the process, you can turn the photos into an HD movie and export it anywhere you’d like.
Some uses for this app include recording your pregnancy, charting your weight loss, watching your children or a pet grow, or even capturing the regrowth of that unfortunate pixie cut you were so sure would make you look like Halle Berry. I used it when I renovated my bathroom, and it’s extremely rewarding to watch the whole process unfold in front of your eyes. You don’t have to choose just one thing to record, either. Watch Me Change lets you keep multiple separate files going at once.
The only problem with this app is that it seems to get really buggy sometimes. Depending on what other apps you have open and what version of the iPhone software your phone is running on, the app tends to crash either during the initial splash screen or when you try to take a photo. Hopefully the programmers are hard at work with updates so this issue will be fixed soon.
