Kalimat may look at first glance like another Words With Friends clone, but it’s actually got quite a lot going for it that WWF doesn’t. And it’s those additions that make this word game one of the top free apps [1] available in this genre.
Like WWF, you can play up to twenty games at a time in the full version of Kalimat (the Lite version limits you to three), and you can either invite friends to play or pick up random games with strangers. One of the things I disliked most about WWF is that it didn’t keep track of your wins or rank players in any way. I like to know who I’m up against, especially when I’m on a butt-kicking winning spree. Kalimat is OpenFeint enabled, which means the game keeps track of your stats for everyone to see. You might even make it onto their leader boards. Too bad no one’s ever going to know about your WWF win where you played “jugglers” for 148 points, huh?
Kalimat also has a “remix” mode where some additional rules and options change up the standard Scrabble setup. Timed turns insure fast, frenetic games, and the faster you play, the more points you get. You may also discover Ali Baba’s treasure along the way and get even more bonus points. Sometimes this mode can prove extremely frustrating, like when your opponent scores 500 points in one turn, but it also makes the whole game much more exciting and unexpected.
Kalimat also keeps track of high scoring words and who played what within each game, which is something extremely useful that WWF lacks. Sometimes I forget which words were mine if the game goes on for a couple days, so it’s nice to have a reference. If you wonder what the heck your opponent just played, you can also look up the definition with one click. You might as well learn something while you’re procrastinating.
The only downfall with Kalimat is that there don’t appear to be as many people playing random games as there are on WWF. I personally don’t like to play with friends, so I need my strangers. It’s not that my friends aren’t intelligent—they’re all brilliant, actually. But they take SO LONG to play. Ok, so maybe Jessica the lawyer and Tara the social worker have more important things to do than be at my beck and call for a little iPhone app action. I understand that, but it doesn’t discount the fact that I want to play NOW, and our little game is taking up a very precious spot alongside my nineteen other much more active games. So to save everyone (read ME) the frustration, I don’t give out my player name to anyone I know. Plus I don’t have to feel guilty about kicking my friends’ butts.
Hopefully, once the word gets out that Kalimat is such a great app, there shouldn’t be any problem finding strangers to dominate with my master word skills.
