Adobe’s recently announced Carousel photo sharing and editing app is now available for download on Apple iPad, iPhone, and Mac computers. Carousel allows users to seamlessly share their images (JPEG only) across the iDevices, automatically, while also allowing for basic non-destructive image edits that include a number of presets, in addition to several familiar options for Lightroom users, including exposure options (tweak shadows and highlights), contrast options (contrast, clarity, and vibrance), and white balance options (temperature and tint). Edited images are immediately available of course, over all iDevices connected to your Carousel.
Sound good so far? Well Carousel offers one more twist, the ability to have up to 5 Carousels and share each Carousel with up to 5 other people, like friends and family members, plus the ability to easily share images via email, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. Sounds great right? And naturally you’re all set to download it, but there’s a catch…there just had to be one…Carousel comes with a subscription plan that costs $9.99/mo or $99.99/year. Ouch. Major ouch. The good news is that now through January 31, 2012, Adobe is offering Carousel for $5.99/mo or $59.99/year, which is better, but still pretty expensive for many of us.
Still, Carousel is pretty effective for making basic but non-destructive edits, it offers unlimited storage, and features the clever option of sharing Carousels with loved ones (or your editor). Whether these advantages make Carousel a more appealing option than using iCloud and iDevices’s basic ability to edit images and share them directly via email, Facebook, etc. will depend entirely on your budget.
Adobe Carousel is available now in the iTunes and Mac App Stores. It comes with a 30-day complimentary subscription, so give it a whirl and see what you think.
