Do you like word games? Do you love games like Scrabble and Words with Friends? Then you’ll love one of the best free iPhone apps [1] around, a fun word game called Word Colors.
Word Colors is very similar to Scrabble, but it’s got some interesting and fun twists that take some getting to used to. For starters, the scoring is a bit different, no it’s a lot different, but that’s what makes the game fun.
Instead of trying to score big with certain letters, in this game it’s based more on color. You’ll notice that when you get your rack of letters, they’re different colors. To score more points, you need to group colors together. The longer your group, the more points you score. Instead of the double and triple word score blocks you see on the Scrabble board, instead you’ll see blocks that have the letters “WC”, “SC”, and blocks that have the plus symbol with a number, such as +1, etc. The WC stands for Wild Card, which means you can choose which color block you want that letter to be. The SC will change that word to a single color and the plus boxes simply add that number to your overall score for the word.
The way to really score big however is to have chains of letters in the same color. Two in a row is double that chain, three in a row triple, and it just goes up from there. It’s the chain that is doubled, not the word however, so if you have a five letter word and the first three letters are green, and the last two are red, you’ll get triple the green letters and double score for the red. So you can see how the colors can be to your advantage if you play the right strategy.
It takes some getting used to, and you’ll often find yourself wondering how you got such a high score for a low word, but once you start playing you’ll get it. Other than these scoring rules, the rules are pretty much the same as Scrabble or Words With Friends.
You can play opponents you know or random players, so it’s pretty easy to get started. I started up, and had an game going in less than a minute.
