Some Nintendo shareholders and analysts are calling for the company to get in on the iOS and Android gold rush. Not all Nintendo franchises make sense as a button-free mobile experience, but the promise for some Nintendo games is tremendous.

An Animal Crossing game on iPhone has potential to be so good it’s scary. You thought Animal Crossing was addictive before? Let’s take at what Nintendo could do with Animal Crossing iOS:

Animal Crossing’s realtime gameplay is perfect for iOS since most people have their phones with them all day long. Have a few minutes to kill? Pop into town and pull a few weeds. No need to always keep your DS with you, or fire up the Wii, just for a three minute play session.

Animal Crossing is built on the idea that your town is a living, breathing place – that life goes on even when you’re not in the game. This concept will feel even more real when it’s possible for people to pop in and pop out much more frequently, via their mobile device.

The ease of in-app purchases in iOS Apps means that Nintendo could make Animal Crossing iPhone a free download, monetized by optional cosmetic or convenience virtual goods. Gamers wouldn’t even need to enter a credit card – all in-app purchases are seamlessly added to users’ cell phone bills.

This would also make it easy for Nintendo to continually update the game with new free (or paid) items and other content. Nintendo wouldn’t have to launch the game with content themed around Halloween, or Christmas. Updates could be created and added later on, at an appropriate time.

Cellphones are always-on devices, in a way that even the 3DS isn’t. Nintendo is slowly but surely implementing better online functions, but they’ll never be able to match the connectivity found in mobile devices that can download and upload data anywhere they have a cell signal.

Players could visit their neighbors, trade items with their friends or post on bulletin boards during their morning commute. Or nearly anywhere else.

Animal Crossing: Wild World has already proven that a touch-controlled Animal Crossing works out quite nicely. It’s easy to see how decorating your home, pulling weeds or fishing could be accomplished with simple taps of the touch screen or other simple swiping gestures.

But what really has us excited is the iPhone’s virtual keyboard. No longer will writing letters or posting bulletins be a chore! Yes, please.

What do you think? If Animal Crossing came to the iPhone, would you play it? Sound off in the comments below.
