Carrying around an iPhone or an iPad is a great way to keep track of things, like appointments and contacts and emails. And of course, the time.
One thing these devices won’t do is chime on the hour. This is something my computer can do, and it really helps me stay aware of the time in a very pleasant way. A nice tune once an hour isn’t disruptive — it’s something I look forward to hearing.
Since iPhones and iPads lack this feature, I decided to create it. Best of all, it’s free.
Clock Chimes [1] is a nice little app that gives you four choices of chimes — two different variations of Westminster chimes, plus Whittington chimes and St. Michael chimes (my personal favorite). Each chime has a unique musical style.
You can also choose the time when the chimes start playing and when they stop, to prevent the chimes from going off during the night.
The chimes work in the background, which means that the app doesn’t have to be running in order for you to hear them.
Clock Chimes [2] is the perfect companion to News Clocks [3] , my popular world clock. You might wonder why I didn’t just add the chimes to News Clocks. Well, News Clocks does includes chimes, but they only work when it’s running. The problem is that News Clocks has so many features already, if I added background chimes, the app would be larger than 20 megabytes. That’s Apple’s limit for over-the-air downloads, and I don’t want to miss out on sales from people who don’t have a computer or a wifi connection.
Whether you use News Clocks [4] or not, go download Clock Chimes [5] for free and enjoy beautiful clock chimes on your iOS device.
