Today GM released a new version of its OnStar RemoteLink app that provides a seamless way to send an address from your smartphone to your car [1] .

Powered by Microsoft's Bing on Android [2] and Google Maps on iPhone [3] , RemoteLink users can search for a nearby businesses using voice or text and send the destination to their OnStar-equipped vehicle, provided they have an active Connections and Directions subscription. Users can save up to five addresses in the app, and send addresses from a contact in their address book.

I reviewed OnStar's app last year [4] , and found myself frequently wishing I could send addresses from the Yelp app on my iPhone [5] to my car. The new app doesn't have that convenience, but being able to search for nearby businesses using Microsoft Bing or Google Maps is a huge step in the right direction. And by adding Nuance to support voice recognition using Google Maps, OnStar's RemoteLink provides additional functionality that the iPhone is painfully missing (unless you've added Nuance's new, free Dragon Go [6] app).

Last year Ford released its Sync Destinations app [7] , which provides similar features to the updated OnStar RemoteLink app. With Sync Destinations, users can add up to 25 saved destinations to their cloud-based profile. Although RemoteLink only saves five destinations, they are downloaded to the car the second you turn the vehicle's ignition. With Sync Destination, you need to pull the address from Sync's cloud-based servers using voice commands.

The Onstar RemoteLink app is not yet compatible with Onstar For My Vehicle [8] , but GM is exploring a way to make it work with the aftermarket product.
