Just a week after The New Yorker announced it had the best iPad app sales of any Condé Nast publication , the high-brow magazine has launched [1] a free way to stay connected without a subscription: its “Goings On” app for iPhone [2] and Android [3] .
The New Yorker’s surprisingly strong iPad app sales, coupled with this new free cross-platform app, shows how the magazine is looking ahead in a time when revenues are constantly decreasing for print publications. Other magazines could look to The New Yorker as a model for wide-ranging digital strategy.
The app makes the New Yorker’s comprehensive listings of concerts, theatre, film, and art gallery showings accessible to more people than ever before. “The app will help people who aren’t necessarily familiar get into the magazine,” Deputy Editor Pam McCarthy, who oversaw the app, told VentureBeat.
“The app is such a strong experience because you’re reading some of the best critics in the world,” McCarthy said.
Ben Greenman, editor of the magazine’s Goings On About Town section, wrote in a blog post today that the app helps highlight truly great events in a city known for its incredible amount to do and see.
“If New York’s cultural wealth has remained constant, the amount of information about the city’s offerings, delivered both by us and by others, has increased geometrically,” Greeman wrote. “But the same new technologies that have flooded us with information can also help us find our way through it.”
“The app is not intended as a replacement for the section in the print magazine,” Greenman wrote. “Rather, it offers an alternative with several immediate advantages: maps for every event, GPS locations, links to buy tickets and contact venues, date and location filters, and clip-and-save features that let you keep a list of your favorite events.”
Exclusives inside the app include more than a dozen entries and audio tours from New Yorker artists and writers. Entries and audio tours focus on personal highlights in New York like the Temple of Dendur inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the new High Line park on the west side of the city.
