Like most iPhone and iPod Touch games, Burney is marketed as addicting, as if that is the most important quality of these games. And hey, it must be pretty important, after all if you can’t stop playing that makes it a good game, no?
Well, no. At least not in my opinion. There are plenty of games that are really addictive that when you stop and think, you realize are actually pretty bad games. Who knows why you keep play them right? I think we can all agree on thing for certain though and that is that if a game is not addictive (as in you don’t want to play it again after one round), then it’s safe to say it’s not a good game.
Enter Burney. Not only is it not addictive as the description says, it’s actually kind of annoying, and that’s even before you get to the actual game play. There is a comic book intro like the description says, although I’m not sure what this adds to the game, but other than that, you get a “loading” screen several times before actually getting to play.
Once you get to the actual game play, this is where the fun starts. “Burney” is a fireball that looks like a small sun with sunglasses on and for some reason he is just hanging out in what looks like an office or lab of some sort. (I know, I know, there’s a story behind all this, some kind of experiment gone wrong, yada yada). He’s bouncing on what look to be mini trampolines suspended in mid air and your job is to get him from one to the next collecting various things before the gas meter runs out or Burney hits a spiked trampoline. To do this, you have to use arrows at the bottom of the screen to move him from one bouncy spot to the next.
The controls are not the best, and when you move Burney, it’s kind of blocky and choppy at best, not very fluid, and you have to use the controls in unison to get him to bounce from the side to get through the maze of trampolines.
Perhaps what is most annoying about this game is not the controls, but the sound effects. The constant bouncing he does while sitting on the trampoline makes a sound like someone is shaking a rock in a jar and when you move him around the screen, he makes a super annoying “Weee” sound. Some catchy music would have been much better.
The graphics aren’t terrible, but having the lab in the background makes it difficult to see the objects you’re trying to collect; it doesn’t blend well.
All in all, this may be a great game, and if I kept playing it I probably could see myself being addicted, however I just don’t want to keep playing. I try but it doesn’t happen. It’s not the worst game I’ve played, but it’s certainly not something I’ll even be thinking about tomorrow.
