GADGET . A social networking service built entirely around the commuting experience, Waze is a free app for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Nokia that automatically shares your real-time driving data with the entire user base.
So, if you are driving along the highway and there's an accident slowing you down, you can either press a button to report the accident or, if multiple Waze users are experiencing the same slowdown, the system will automatically trigger a warning in the map data, causing Waze to detour other drivers who are relying upon its turn-by-turn directions.
The product is free, but since the information is user-generated, the quality will be determined by the number of people utilizing the service in a given geographic area. Other Waze users turn up as icons on the screen while driving, and it's kind of neat to see another user at the same intersection. Warning: Waze does burn the battery quickly. $0; visit waze.com.
