Summer App Guide - Gadgets

By Tuckerrson [1] , Yr12 Intern

With the hundreds of thousands of apps available in both Apple’s App Store and Androids App Market it’s not hard to get lost in the midst of all the fart and sex position apps (I hope you’re not reading this, Mum) - So here’s my list of some freaking sweet. So to begin with – my 5 must have Android apps and games that will keep you occupied this summer:

My Beach HD ($0.99) – Seeing as though this is my ‘Summer Guide’; I thought it only fit to mention a beach app. My Beach is a live background which you can set to your own private beach fit with fireworks, waves and the whole lot, letting you feel like you never left the beach! All it’s missing is the sand stuck in your swimmers.

Worms ($1.99) – Who doesn’t know Worms? The cool little strategy game where you blow other worms up! It’s awesome, it’s addictive and best of all it’s $1.99 that I can promise you won’t regret spending.

Flixster (Free) – This handy little app gives you all the reviews and trailers for movies in a second. But my favourite thing about it is how it finds your location, tells you your nearest cinema, give you directions to it while at the same time showing session times; perfect for summer travelling and holidays.

Glympse (Free) – You’re either going to think this is really cool and handy or really creepy; I think it’s cool. Glympse sends and tracks your location, which you can send to whoever you like for a set period of time. They don’t need to have the app, it’s just a private link which is sweet too! What I think it’s cool for is when you’re running late or if people are just wondering where you are, you can ‘glympse’ them and they can see where you are and an ETA of when you’ll be there. Cool right?

TuneIn Radio (Free) – Besides my social networking apps, this would have to be my most used app. You can find literally any radio station in the world, whether it be the penguins broadcasting in the artic or 2DayFM in Sydney and stream them live, as well as record them on your phone. It works flawlessly, uses little data but still maintains quality. Definitely an app I would recommend.

For iPhone:

Words With Friends (Free) – Words with Friends is basically scrabble that you can play against your friend on the other side of the world if you wanted to. Using WiFi or your data connection, you can play a game of scrabble with anyone who has the app installed. It gets addictive, it is fun, and for once it’s a mobile game that may educate you (slightly).

Shazam Encore ($6.49) – Ever hear a song on the radio that you can’t get out of your head but just can’t work out what it’s called so you can get it? Well your problems are now solved! Next time you hear it, open Shazam and hold it up to your speaker and within seconds, shazam, it will tell you the song name! If you’re the impatient type or just really like humming, you can also try humming into it and it will pick the song up too! Super handy!

WhatsApp Messenger ($0.99) – You might be thinking why would I need another free messaging app now I have iMessage, but hear me out. WhatsApp is pretty much iMessage, works nearly as well, but its one big advantage is that the other person doesn’t need an iPhone for it to work, as there’s also an app for Symbian, BlackBerry and Android too, so as long as your friends have it, you can all text and picture message each other unlimitedly for free!

Remote (Free) – This app is only cool if you have a Mac, Apple TV or an AirPort Express, but if you have one or all of these things it’s pretty awesome! What it does is be, well, a remote for your Apple TV, Mac or AirPort Express, but what it does differently is it wirelessly streams all your media from your iPhone or Mac which you can then control with your iPhone, which makes for a seamless, easy multimedia setup.
