A new iPhone app called Vhoto allows users to run through their videos and find precious moments to convert them into a still photo. This can include you doing flips, jumps or practically anything which cannot be captured with a conventional still image. The app makes use of computer vision technology to scan the video youâve taken and find noteworthy still images from them.
The CEO and co-founder of Vhoto Noah Heller said â" âWe have this paradigm around taking stills, hitting the button at the right time, thatâs a holdover from 35 millimeter cameras. It so arbitrary (sic) that you have to hit the shutter button to get a great moment. It is so arbitrary that we have to choose between photo and video, when to a computer there is no difference.â
I am not sure but it seems to be doing the processing on the iPhone, and not on the server side. It scans the video based on twenty different metrics â" including blur, contrast, faces, smiles, user intent, and what chief executive Noah Heller calls [1] a ânovelty detectorâ to ensure that the still frames are different from the preceding frame. You can save the photo to your camera roll. The app also allows you to tag, share and search for othersâ photos.
Apple introduced the burst mode in iPhone 5s to make it easier to capture moving objects, Vhoto takes this to a whole new level.
The technology used here certainly has the potential to go a long way, especially if itâs programmed to identify shapes and other complicated data.
The app is available for free at the App Store and is compatible with all devices running iOS 7.0+. What do you think about this new app?
