Babes vs. Robots free iPhone app review

Babes Vs. Robots: 4 out of 5

C’mon—admit it. You know you want to check out this game. It’s hard to resist something called Babes vs. Robots, especially when it’s available as one of the many free apps for iPhone [1] . Even though it’s touted as an Action + Adventure + Puzzle game, it’s really just an Angry Birds clone, but with some interesting options that its predecessor lacks.

In this game, you get to be the “babe,” standing behind a giant missile launcher in your little white go-go boots and booty shorts. Parents don’t have to worry though. The figure is much too tiny to be considered sexually suggestive or graphic, so it’s not like this is one step away from Playboy or anything.

Your targets of destruction are a variety of robots, who pace and bleep and grind their gears inside the various structures which you must then shoot down. This is where Babes vs. Robots actually has a leg up on Angry Birds . You get to choose from a variety of weapons—battle rockets, bombs, sticky bombs, and Molotov cocktails. This is a definite improvement on the standard restricted lineup of birds, and it provides an added complication of deciding which one you’ll use at what time. The sticky bombs are my favorite. You get a satisfying “clunk” when it attaches to a robot, and then you just sit back and wait for it to get blown to smithereens. Sometimes, the robots don’t get completely destroyed, and instead they start charging you, which is another interesting twist on the genre.

The graphics are extremely detailed and pretty impressive, and the splash screens between levels are pretty much works of art. The sound effects are realistic and varied, and the score is a heart-pounding Star Wars-esque orchestration that helps sustain the whole sci-fi mood.

The app download comes with one theme that has 21 levels, and there are two more additional themes available which you can purchase for $.99 each. There are also many “Coming Soon” slots on the main menu, so I expect the game to eventually expand to fulfill the Action + Adventure + Puzzle promise.

Overall, this app completely surpassed my concerns that it was just another rehash of an overdone idea. If anything, my only criticism is the babes and robots concept is sort of wasted here. I expected tons of cheesy dialogue, or at least a few cleavage shots. As it stands now, Bar Star is way more suggestive and racy than this app. I hope future Babes vs. Robots updates will better utilize these characters to fulfill the expectations of what I imagine has to be a pretty eager audience base.
