MCG goes virtual with unveiling of it's own iPhone app

FOOTY fans can avoid finals traffic jams, find their seat, pinpoint the car and even get live updates on matches as technology taps into the game.

The MCG has unveiled a stadium iPhone application to help ease the squeeze on punters gearing up for the finals.

The free app allows users to find live updates on stadium parking, get specific directions to seats, view MCG tweets and can be used to upload photos straight to social networks.

"The MCG has set the smartphone technology benchmark for other stadiums and we hope to roll out more app features and an Android version later in the year," MCC spokesman Shane Brown said.

It comes as four grass-roots footy leagues forge into the digital era with a new app to catch the scores for local games in real time from anywhere in the world.

The Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Ovens and Murray leagues have developed a score pad application through mobile marketing company RedTxt that allows designated score keepers to input the results.

Ballarat Football League chief Rod Ward said it was a great way to update fans.

"We hope to eliminate the paper-based manual scoring and timekeeping solutions completely in 2012."

The MCG is also becoming the first sports stadium to create a virtual capacity crowd based on its social network memberships.

"Our goal is to become the first stadium in Australia, and possibly the world, to have 100,000 online fans - a virtual MCG if you like," Mr Brown said.
