Amazon Underground: $10,000 worth of Android paid apps gone free

We all love free apps and games â€" in fact, we constantly offer you tips on iPhone and Android apps that are available free of charge for a limited time. But Amazon has decided to step up its free apps game by launching an entirely new mobile application that gives you fast access to a collection of apps “that are actually free,” and that happen to be worth more than $10,000 combined.

The app is called Amazon Underground, and you have to install it on your device to get the apps.

“Many apps and games that are marked as ‘free’ turn out not to be completely free,” Amazon notes, saying that various applications come with built-in in-app offers. However, Underground supposedly offers apps that are 100% free versions of popular premium titles.

The list of apps includes Office Suite Professional 8, Goat Simulator, PhotoSuite 4, Frozen Free Fall, Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions, Angry Birds Slingshot Stella, Looney Toons Dash! and many others.

All these apps come without any in-app purchases, as Amazon has struck a special deal with developers for Underground apps. Basically, Amazon is paying a certain amount on a per-minute played basis, so they are able to waive their in-app fees.

To get these apps marked as “Actually Free,” you’ll have to get the Amazon Underground app from Amazon.com, log in with your credentials, and start exploring apps and games. To get started, head to amazon.com/underground from your mobile device.

Pushbullet's free file-sending app Portal arrives for iPhone

Pushbullet’s Portal app [1] that lets you send large (or small) files from your computer to your phone is now available for iOS devices.

First launched for Android  in June, the app lets you bundle up multiple individual files and beam them to your iPhone for free, made all the more useful by the lack of file size limits or total number of files.

Another handy feature is that it allows you to transfer entire folders as they are, and maintains the folder structure when you browse them on your phone. Photos are automatically added to your gallery, too.

However, while Portal is simple to use and an effective tool for getting your files onto your phone, it’s totally useless at removing them â€" it’s a one-way transfer. The company does say it’s working on making it a two-way process, though.

Until then, there’s always the original Pushbullet app [2] or other services like WeTransfer for iOS , which lets you send files of up to 10GB in one go.

Jailbreak tweak steals 220,000 iCloud accounts and passwords

If you jailbreak your iOS device , beware shady tweaks that are looking to steal your iCloud login credentials. Chinese security website WooYun [1] reports that some 220,000 iCloud email addresses and passwords have been stolen by jailbreak tweaks so far.

Hackers are said to be using a variety of “built-in backdoors” in what could be numerous jailbreak tweaks to acquire iCloud information, according to the warning. We don’t yet know who is behind the scheme, or what they intend to do with the stolen iCloud accounts.

But of course, with access to both email addresses and passwords, the hackers would be able to read iMessages, steal contact information and emails, and even acquire photos and other media. The image above shows some of the accounts that have been stolen.

220,000 users seems like a lot for one jailbreak tweak, but it’s thought a number of them may have been used, and some of them may have posed as free versions of popular paid tweaks. Reddit user ZippyDan also points out that the Chinese market traders often sell iPhones that are pre-jailbroken, and many of these may have been passed on with the shady tweaks already installed.

To keep your iCloud data safe, you should avoid installing jailbreak tweaks from unknown and untrusted sources. You should also enable two-step authentication , which would prevent someone else from accessing your account even if your email address and password was obtained.

Pocket God vs. Desert Ashes turns killing Pygmies into a strategy game

Fans of the popular Pocket God [1]  franchise should take note; the company that created the pygmy killing game has teamed up with Desert Ashes to make a game starring the former with the mechanics of the latter.

Pocket God vs. Desert Ashes is exactly as it sounds. The crossover game features the familiar family of worshipers fighting a turn-based strategy battle against the Landians. When those pesky land thieves invade the Island, the Pygmies prepare to fight. [2]

Instead of just waiting around for your turn to zap them into oblivion, or dangle them above the ocean to become fish food, the Pygmies have decided to take control of their fate and fight against an invasion from creatures that appear from a magical portal (a portal from another game, apparently).

The game itself is actually more Desert Ashes than Pocket God. Players send allies across the way to attack enemies in turn-based combat. Your buildings generate revenue and you have bases to protect. You can choose allies based on their stats.

When your team attacks, the Pocket God aspect really shines through. Pygmies throw their spears and make their funny noises. You get a close-up of the little guys during the attack animation to see your favorite island dwellers; Ooga, Booga, Nooby, Dooby, and my personal favorite, Klik and Klak.

In addition to the main characters, the Pygmies have teamed up with some of their former enemies, including Zombie Pygmies and Laser Sharks. Plus, recruit T-Rexes, Dodo Birds, and Jellyfish to help you fight against the Landians.

The game features a night and day system, complete with weather conditions that affect what happens on the battlefield.

Once you’ve destroyed the Landians in single-player mode, you can join up with friends in a multiplayer version of the game for unlimited hours of enjoyment.
