iOS 8.4 running on 40% of devices just 8 days after release

Apple’s latest iOS 8.4 update is already running on more than 40% of compatible devices, just eight days after it was rolled out to the public. It’s though the introduction of Apple Music â€" which was launched alongside iOS 8.4 â€" is one of the reasons for its rapid adoption.

Aside from Apple Music and a new Music app, however, iOS 8.4 is mostly filled with bug fixes and performance improvements. Had it not been for the new streaming service, then, adoption almost certainly wouldn’t have been quite this fast.

This adoption rate may be “dangerous for Spotify,” says Mixpanel [1] , the analytics firm that’s been monitoring iOS 8.4’s popularity. “That’s hundreds of millions of people who can get a free three-month trial with Apple Music.”

After that three-month trial, Apple Music will cost $9.99 for an individual plan, which is in line with what Spotify charges. However, Apple also offers a family plan for up to six users priced at just $14.99, which isn’t matched by Spotify â€" or any of its rivals.

In addition to tens of millions of tracks available for streaming, Apple Music boasts Beats 1 radio, a worldwide channel that’s live 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

iOS 8.4 is a free update that’s compatible with iPhone 4s and up, iPad 2 and up, and the fifth-generation iPod touch.
