PadGadget’s Flashback Friday: Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 on Sale for $0.99

sonic the hedgehog

I still remember the first time I played Sonic the Hedgehog. The beautiful chime every time you grab the rings and the boisterous noise when you lose them are burned into my brain. I loved how fast-paced the game seemed. Sonic dashed way faster than any other platform character I’d ever played. I was hooked from the start.

This week, Sega dropped the price of the first and second installment of the Sonic series to only $0.99. If you were waiting for the right time to pick those games up in the App Store, that time is now.

The first Sonic game [1] came out in 1991 on the Sega Genesis. Players would speed along a side-scrolling path, collecting as many coins as possible, trying to catch up with the evil Dr. Robotnik.

The fun of the game is Sonic’s ability to jump to the highest heights thanks to his super speed, as well as strategically located springboards and ramps. Whenever he came upon a loop, oh the fun really took off.

Players collect rings as they run along the pathway. If you get hit by an enemy, you’ll lose everything. But you can also collect them if you grab them as they fall to ensure you are safe from further attack.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 [2] joined the family in 1992, also on Sega Genesis. In this sequel, players could take on the role of Tails as he dashed along the rolling pathways.

The iOS version includes some additional features, like new levels, additional characters, and even Time Attack mode.

Both Sonic the Hedgehog [3] and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 [4] are on sale for a limited time for $0.99, normally priced at $2.99. They are available on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Download them in the App Store today.
