MyScript Stylus [1] , a new iOS app from the folks behind MyScript Memo [2] , promises iOS device owners a smart, responsive handwriting recognition keyboard for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and is available to download now on the App Store.
The free app launched earlier today, and the premise behind the application is simple. MyScript Stylus adds a new iOS keyboard to your iPhone or iPad, and once enabled, this keyboard provides a dedicated space along the bottom of the screen into which users can write. You can draw with your finger or use an iOS-compatible stylus to do this; either way, MyScript will then attempt to turn your scrawl into digital text. A series of dedicated controls allow users to delete words, add in a space, or add a new line, and the app impressively supports a total of 39 different languages.
Over in the app’s release notes, developer MyScript explains:
Designed for iPhone, iPod and iPad, MyScript Stylus provides a handwriting alternative to onscreen and physical keyboards. The auto scrolling input panel allows you to write using fingertip and stylus in any application including email, text documents, calendar, web browser, SMS, MMS, etc.
Your handwriting is converted into digital text in real time. You can write in cursive or print, and MyScript Stylus even makes sense of your scribbles. The input panel allows you to correct and edit the content you have written using candidates and intuitive gestures.
Indeed, because this is an iOS keyboard (rather than a standalone app), users can have MyScript Stylus input handwritten text into any iOS application which offers a text field. This could be the Messages app, the Mail app, Evernote, Twitter, or Facebook â€" the opportunities for using MyScript are fairly limitless.

All in all, MyScript is pretty impressive, though you’ll need a reasonably neat hand in order to have the application make sense of your handwriting. If you’re using an index finger on your iPhone, this of course is going to be a lot harder than using MyScript alongside a stylus and an iPad; that being said, we’re pleased to see the app offer universal support (especially since Apple entered the “phablet†market with its iPhone 6 Plus last year).
