There’s an App for that! And… There are Apps that Really Do Nothing

Simon Blog

The phrase these days seem to be "There's an App for that".  Dedicated Apps have built up the Smartphone 's popularity we are experiencing today.  We all have our favorite and go-to apps [1] , and then there are apps that do virtually nothing.  Some are fun to just download [2] and view while simply others aren't.

Dog Translation Apps

Dog App #1When I read about an App that translates your dog's bark, I wondered if I could be the next Dog Whisperer.  Well apparently there are quite a few Apps for translating your dog's bark ranging in Free to $0.99.

I tried the free Dog Translation [3] Apps:

Dog Translator! [4]

Dog Translator (Free!) [5]

Bowlingual Dog Translator (Free) [6]

They all work on the same principle, tap to listen to your dogs bark and the App translates the bark into some meaningful and funny phrases like "How old am I again in dog years?"

If you are wondering how they EVER make any money publishing these apps, I can assure you that they don't.

However, seeing I don't have a dog, its just plain funny trying to bark at the phone..... while I was riding the subway.  I was happy to provide the other commuter's with a brief moment of hilarious fun at the expense of looking like a moron.

Lie Detector Apps

Search "Lie Detector" and you a return load of Apps to tell if someone is lying.  If you believe it works (reading from some reviews, I do think that there is a segment of the "smartphone' users that think it does), then I am sorry to tell you it does not, and while I am shedding truths,  TV Wrestling (like WWE) isn't really fighting either.

A more common form of lie detection is the polygraph test.  This test measures and records several physiological indices such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and skin conductivity while the subject is asked and answers a series of questions, in the belief that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses that can be differentiated from those associated with non-deceptive answers.

Even with these elaborate measurements, a polygraph test can be flaky and is not recognized as admissible evidence in all courts.  Needless to say, a lie detection app would be less accurate and reliable.  However, I am sure it will produce some moments of fun among friends.

In a vast App ecosystem - there the good, the bad and the ugly.

As a testament to the success of the App Store [7] , we see our share of good and "not so good" apps.  Like being in a bookstore, I think it is fun to browse around to see the lighter side of the apps available on the App store.  Most of them are quite slick and some are even well designed.  Any readers care to share some of the quirky apps you've seen?
