CandyChase is an iPhone and iPod Touch game that is surprisingly similar to an old game you’re probably familiar with: Frogger.
It has some minor differences, but the goal is the same: To get across rows of moving objects without getting hit. In Frogger, it was a frog jumping across traffic without getting hit by a car; In CandyChase, you’re a piece little bug, called a Bum Bum that is trying to make it across row upon row of fast moving lady bugs who I’m guessing are trying to get their lunch.
You’re goal is to get your colored bug into it’s matching colored home without getting caught by the lady bugs, while eating the pieces of candy in the way. When you get caught, what looks like a little ghost bug floats up and the level starts over.
The bugs move in groups and patterns and it’s up to you to figure out the patterns and move accordingly. You can only move up and down, not left to right, so once you get to the top, you can’t just move up anywhere, you have to wait for the lady bugs to move you to the exact spot.
There are tons of levels and more obstacles than just the lady bugs. You’ll run into wooden boards that you can’t pass through, and other creatures to block your path. In the beginning the game is pretty easy to give you a feel for how it’s played, but it gets increasingly difficult with each level.
The graphics are cute and fun, and the animations are smooth, and not choppy. The music is a bit boring for this type of game, but that’s hardly a deal breaker. When you first start the game, you have the option to choose how you want the controls to work. Since you can only move up and down, you basically have the option of being able to tap in the corners (right corner=up, left=down and vice versa), top and bottom (this seems weird but maybe it’s me), or side to side. There are a lot of options as far as controls, too many in my opinion, but you can play around with them and find the one that works for you.
If you liked to play Frogger, then my guess is you’ll love CandyChase, as other than a few minor changes, it’s very much the same game. In either case, it’s fun to play, super addicting, and a solid game that you’ll probably find yourself playing nonstop. Highly recommended.
