Gallery Doctor uses algorithms to free your iPhone from bad photos | VentureBeat | Mobile

Smartphones may have helped unleash the amateur creative in everyone, but there’s little question it has opened a Pandora’s box of bad photos. And this is where Gallery Doctor [1] wants to help.

The handiwork of Israeli startup MyRoll [2] , Gallery Doctor first launched on Android back in February. In a nutshell, the app scans your camera roll and iCloud and pulls out the ones that are blurry, duplicates, have bad lighting, or are just plain-old boring.

The problem it’s looking to solve â€" thousands of photos clogging up camera rolls and cloud-storage services â€" is universal. And that’s why it’s now available to iPhone users [3] , too.

Mobile engagement is the new customer engagement. Period. You’re already behind. Catch up with our free upcoming expert roundtable [4] .

Once the app has scanned your device, you can hit “Review” for each option (“Bad Photos,” “Similar Photos,” “For Review”) and in one fell swoop delete all the images identified by Gallery Doctor’s algorithms as “awry” â€" or you can manually peruse them one-by-one and assess them individually.

This is perhaps where Gallery Doctor differs from other similar apps like Cleen [5] or Flic [6] , insofar as Gallery Doctor can remove the manual labor by letting you delete all your “bad” photos with a single tap.

There’s no denying that Gallery Doctor has taken some cues from the aforementioned alternatives. Indeed, Cleen and Flic tap Tinder’s usability book by letting you swipe left or right to indicate whether you wish to keep a photo â€" it’s basically an easy way of cleaning up your camera roll.

With Gallery Doctor, there is a similar feature in its “For Review” section, which is where it highlights questionable photosâ€"when it’s not certain whether they’re good, bad, boring, or what. Here, you can manually swipe to tell it what’s what.

Having already analyzed billions of photos through a separate gallery app [7] which launched a few years back, MyRoll now has two main offerings â€" one for highlighting all your good photos, and one for highlighting all your bad photos.

Based on our tests, its algorithms are fairly accurate, though in the early stages you probably shouldn’t rely entirely on Gallery Doctor’s curation â€" there are definitely some that it deems “bad” that aren’t really “bad” (in this writer’s humble opinion, at least).

Using machine learning, however, Gallery Doctor should improve over time as it learns which kind of photos you like and don’t like.

Show me the money

Though the Gallery Doctor app for Android is free to download, with no ads or subscriptions in place either, MyRoll has opted to charge $3 to download the iPhone incarnation. We asked MyRoll founder Ron Levy about this disparity.

“We launched Gallery Doctor as a completely new product and we wanted to see how users react,” he says. “The reaction is fantastic with over 75 percent  of users actually accepting our recommendations to delete photos. Since one of the ways we’re looking to monetize Gallery Doctor is through a paid app, we decided to check that first on iOS, given that the Android app is already free.”

In other words, MyRoll is exploring monetization options, and it hasn’t decided how to do so yet.

It’s worth noting that the main MyRoll app on Android (the iOS version was pulled a while back) charges to remove ads, and an additional Premium option is available with add-on services such as cloud storage. These are all potential options for both the Android and iOS versions of Gallery Doctor, so don’t be surprised if the iOS version eventually sheds its download fee.

Who takes the best / worst / most photos, anyway?

Gallery Doctor is actually a great little app, one that has garnered 500,000 downloads on Android already, analyzing 35 million photos along the way. And based on this data, it has pulled out some interesting nuggets that shed some light on trends and patterns among the smartphone-using public.

According to Gallery Doctor:

  • People in San Francisco take 1.5 times more bad photos than people in New York
  • People in Japan are the biggest photo takers, with an average of 2 times more photos in their gallery than those in the U.S., and 1.5 times more than those in Spain, Italy, and Germany
  • 20 percent of Japanese users’ photos are near-duplicates
  • People in China snap the least amount of photos, about 50 percent fewer than the U.S.
  • Brazil, Argentina, and the U.K. are top for the worst photos

Gender & Age

  • Women take 10 percent more photos than men â€" 1,360 photos, compared to 1,230 for men
  • Women have an average of 20 percent more “bad” photos than men
  • Women are better at deleting â€" they remove 17 percent more photos than men
  • 18-24 year-olds are the biggest photo-takers, taking an average of 30 percent more than 13-17 year-olds (who, as it happens, take the least amount of photos)
  • People aged 35-44 take the most similar photos out of all the age groups, almost 30 percent more than 18-24 year olds, and 10 percent more than 25-34 year olds

Founded out of Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2012, MyRoll was rebranded from Flayvr [8] last July, shortly after the company raised $2 million in seed funding [9] .

07 » Free fitness iPhone apps fail to meet American College of Sports Medicine exercise guidelines » University of Florida

Are you planning on ramping up your exercise regimen this summer? There may not be an app for that -- at least not a reliable one.

UF Health researchers recently found that only one of 30 popular free fitness apps for iPhones meets the majority of guidelines for physical activity from the American College of Sports Medicine, the world’s largest sports medicine and exercise science organization. The findings were published this month in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

When compared to the guidelines for aerobic exercise, strength or resistance, and flexibility, the top-scoring app was the Sworkit Lite Personal Workout Trainer App with 9.01 out of a possible 14 points. Each app was scored across those three categories, examining to what extent they adhered to the specific American College of Sports Medicine guidelines, including parameters for safety, warm-ups, cool-downs, stretching, intensity, frequency and progression.

While more than half the apps included some of the recommendations for aerobic exercise and 90 percent met at least one criterion for strength and resistance, two-thirds of the apps did not meet any of the flexibility criteria.

“While apps have great potential to give more people access to workouts that could help them achieve a healthy weight and fitness level, we found that the vast majority of apps are not as safe as they could be and do not give users the type of well-rounded workouts known to be most effective,” said François Modave, Ph.D., associate professor in the UF department of health outcomes and policy and lead author of the study.

Ultimately, only Sworkit Lite Personal Workout Trainer met more than half of the criteria. Three apps met more than half the criteria in the aerobic category: Sworkit Lite Personal Workout Trainer, C25K® â€" 5K Trainer Free and Running for Weight Loss. Four apps earned half the possible points in the strength or resistance category: Sworkit Lite Personal Workout Trainer, Ultimate Fitness Free, JEFIT Workout and StrongLifts 5X5. Ultimate Fitness Free was no longer available on the App Store at the time of this release. No app scored above 50 percent in the flexibility category.

“Several of the apps contained high-quality content in one of the three categories, but almost none of them had high-quality content in all of them, especially flexibility” said Heather Vincent, Ph.D., FACSM, assistant professor in the department of orthopaedics and rehabilitation in the UF College of Medicine. “This is a problem because flexibility is important for good exercise form, relaxation and cool-down.”

In addition to not meeting the specific criterion for each category, 23 out of 30 apps did not provide an actual training plan, explain how to choose a workout or explain how to organize the workouts through the week. That makes it difficult, especially for beginners, to follow a safe and physiologically sound progression in their exercise regimen.

“The issues with these apps place users at risk for injury because the apps fail to prepare them to take on the exercises, use proper techniques and address safety issues surrounding different types of exercise,” said Modave. “Our hope is that this study, which is the first to explore what extent fitness apps are adhering to the ACSM Guidelines, starts a conversation about how to harness apps to give people high-quality, safe and effective workouts.”

American Casino Guide App Introduces FREE Instant Casino Coupons For iPhone... -- DANIA BEACH, Fla., July 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

DANIA BEACH, Fla., July 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Travelers looking for savings at U.S. casinos can now get the FREE American Casino Guide app that allows them to instantly download casino coupons directly to their iPhone or iPad.

Logo - [1]

Photo - [2]

The app was developed by the publishers of the American Casino Guide, which has been published annually for the past 24 years and is the #1 bestselling book in the U.S. on the subject of casino gambling and travel.

A special new feature of the app is its "Instant Coupon" section which allows users to download coupons for FREE, or on a paid basis, for only 99 cents. However, as an introductory 90-day offer, all coupons can be downloaded for FREE, until October 31, 2015.

"These coupons offer great savings at casinos throughout the U.S. with two-for-one deals on items such as: buffets, shows, drinks, attractions, nightclub admissions and more," says Steve Bourie, author of the Guide and creator of the app. "Using just one show coupon could easily save a user $75, or more," adds Bourie. "We will be adding new coupons all the time including offers for great gambling bonuses, such as free slot play and anyone can download as many coupons as they want for FREE during this special 90-day introductory period."

Users can easily search for casino coupons [3] by casino name, or by the type of offer, such as "buffet" or "show." There is also a "map view" which brings up a map pinpointing which casinos within a 100-mile radius of the user are offering special coupon savings.

The app can be downloaded in the App Store at [4]

"This is an update to our original American Casino Guide app, which was released previously and has had tens of thousands of satisfied users," says Bourie. "Our goal has always been to provide a useful guide for people wanting to have fun in a casino, while saving a few dollars, and this new app helps us further achieve that goal."

Popular features from the previous app that are still available in the updated version include: detailed listings on each casino, including: address, phone numbers (with one touch calling), room rates, buffet prices, games offered, turn-by-turn directions, plus a direct link to each casino's website; and a "casinos nearby" feature, which uses location-based technology to show users a list, or map view, of all casinos within a 100-mile radius of their current location. There is also a casino reviews [5] feature, which allows users to read thousands of casino reviews that have been written by other users and posted on the website. Users can also write and sub mit their own reviews through the app, as well as upload their own casino photos.

Another popular feature that is still available is a section that includes more than 80 "how-to-gamble videos" which have been viewed more than eight million times on the American Casino Guide's YouTube channel [6] . Bourie is the host of the videos and each gives useful tips to viewers on how to properly play the most popular casinos games, as well as explaining the best strategies for winning on each of those games. This enables users to have a library of comprehensive gambling strategies to bring with them right into the casino!

The 2015 edition of the 496-page American Casino Guide book sells for $18.95 at bookstores and select AAA offices, or on-line for a discounted price of only $13.49 at [7] . Other major on-line retailers, such as, and, also stock the book.

.Decluster (dot decluster) is a vertically scrolling 2D shooter game (shmup). The controls you need are just two. To move your ship and to fire the homing laser. Because it is designed for mobile devices, you can control easily on the iPhone / iPad.

Slide your finger anywhere on the screen to move your ship. The relative touch movement is adopted. And tap second finger to fire the homing laser. Basic shots are automatic.

The homing laser is powerful activity and is also a key to surviving. The homing laser requires the gauge of it at least 1 Lv. The moment the homing laser was fired, bullets around your ship are canceled and get cancel bonuses. This is so important. Don’t forget it.

The player’s unhitting box is very small. It is displayed as a white rectangle in the center of the ship. And when a lot of bullets appear, the game-speed gets slowdown. Therefor you can keep surviving more than meets the eye.

Four different difficulties. From beginner to expert. The novice difficulty has some benefits from the start. Extra options and extra lives. If you are beginner fun of shooter, the novice difficulty is a good choice.

In the settings, you can adjust the size of game view and you can also adjust the touch sensitivity for slide control. If it is hard to see the screen because of your finger, or you have incongruous with the slide control, then try to adjust them.

From version 2.0.1, the boss battle mode was added.

The Week's Best Android, iPhone, iPad, and Windows Phone Apps

We are literally days away from the release of Windows 10 on PCs and tablets, but we still don't have a definitive release date for Windows 10 Mobile. That is ever so slightly annoying, given that one of the big things about Windows 10 is the concept of universal apps. Windows Phone 8 apps support is hardly amazing as it is, what's going to happen in that lull before release? Not that I feel like the mobile version should be rushed out before it's ready, that wouldn't be beneficial to anyone.

But while we ponder about what the future might bring, here is this week's batch of apps for your downloading pleasure.

iPhone Apps

Pixcall:  [1] This app is what the creators refer to as a 'teleportation photo app', and promises that it lets you meet and do things with friends, even if you happen to be thousands of miles away from each other. Essentially you organise a time to hang out with your friends, and when that time occurs your phone's cameras will activate simultaneously. Whatever the result, you can all view, comment on, download, and share them with your other friends. [Free]

AccuWeather: [2]  This one is a crowdsourced weather app, and has just had a decent update. The new AccUCast lets you become part off the weather forecast cycle, sharing your current weather and road conditions with people in the local area and help them stay one step ahead of mother nature. There have also been updates to the minute-by-minute forecasts, and now you can get rain warnings, accurate to your street, two hours in advance. [Free]

NINE: [3]  NINE is a visual to-do list, designed to let you quickly remind yourself of things you need to do. There's a nice nine-grid system that organises everything, based on the general action you need to take (buy, make, watch, do, etc), and everything is kept separate from your photo gallery so you don't lose anything. Plus, old items are archived so you don't really lose them once they've been completed. [£0.79]

Skyüber: [4]  I think the purpose of this app is fairly self-explanatory, but here goes. Skyüber is basically Uber for the skies, letting you book passage in planes and sharing the costs with any number of experienced pilots. Obviously they can't have the plane pick you up from your house, but if you want to take a flight without a huge cost then this is worth looking into. [Free]

Travelex Money: [5]  Ordering currency has only been a pain if your local post office is prone to very long queues during off-peak hours. But anything can be made easier, and Travelex Money is here to make it easier to buy foreign currency; all it takes is a few taps from your phone. It'll tell you how much would be a good idea to order, based on where you're going, and lets you choose between having your money delivered to your home or picking it up at your nearest Travelex location. [Free]

iPad Apps

Colorfy: Colouring Book for Adults: [6]  Colouring in is one of those things that adults never do, but children love. Now have you noticed how care-free and happy children are? Is it a coincidence? Probably, but that doesn't mean colouring can't be soothing. That's what Colorfy is for, it's an adult colouring book filled with an array of floral patterns that are designed to ease anxiety and watch time fly by. [Free -- with in-app purchases]

Smarter Paris: [7]  An offline tool designed to help you make the most of your trip to Paris, Smarter Paris has the equivalent of thousands of pages of information and over 1,500 images. There's a map so you know were to go, landmark guides, a trip planner, as well as reviews of landmarks, restaurants, and bars. There are even tools, like a currency converter, dictionary, and phrasebook. [£2.99]

MyEye: [8]  Another option in the world of live-streaming, MyEye lets you use your iPad's camera as a conduit for filming and sharing with the wider community. There's nothing much distinguishing it from rivals, perhaps aside from a celebrity endorsement in the form of David Beckham, but if you want to try a new option (and want to enjoy the 72 hour replays) then you know what to do. [Free]

Chrome: [9]  Safari is known to be a bit rubbish compared to its rivals, so you'll want to install a better browser like Chrome. Google has just updated it, and now Google has updated to include gesture control for navigation. That means you're less reliant on pesky buttons to find your way around. [Free]

Laundrapp: [10]  So you don't have a washing machine, or you have clothes that absolutely have to be dry cleaned, but you don't have much time. It's no problem, as long as you live in London, Birmingham, or Edinburgh. Laundrapp has a team of people who will pick up your clothes at a time that suits you, sort everything out and then send it back to you. It's now had a new updated interface, and improvements to customer care, so everything is nice and simple. [Free]

Android Apps

Tiles Instagram Lock Screen: [11]  There are many things you can do to spice up your lock screen, and Tiles is one that let's you turn it into a collage of photos from your Instagram feed. It's all customisable, so you get to choose which accounts you follow show up, and you don't even need an internet connection for it to work. [Free]

Pause: [12]  This one is a curated music magazine, containing s tories, interviews, reviews, audio, and video from some of the world's best music authorities. That includes the likes of the Guardian, the New York Times, Billboard, and more. This is the perfect download for music lover. [Free]

Inbox: [13]  Inbox has been a controversial addition to Google's email infrastructure, but now it has an in credibly useful new feature in the form of Snooze. In effect it lets you snooze your e mail notifications, so that you can deal with them at a more appropriate time. You can also set reminders to compose emails, so you have no excuse for forgetting to deal with your emails. [Free]

Adobe Lightroom: [14]  Lightroom is an Adobe app that uses the power of Photoshop to help you create your own incredible images without having to jump between apps. It's had a decent update, and that means you can edit images much faster, improvem ents that let you easily and effectively crop your images, and a new 'Segmented View' that offers new ways to discover and interact with your images. [Free -- requires Creative Cloud Photography subscription]

YouTube: [15]  The official YouTube app has had a nice big update, and the emphasis is on making discovering your content easier than ever before. Now your subscriptions, favourites, and recommendations are only a fe w taps away. There are also new in-app editing tools to make it easier dealing with video on the go. [Free]

Windows Phone Apps

Dailymotion: [16]  Dailymotion is one of those YouTube rivals that has a huge library of videos for you to enjoy. The app is ideal for keeping up to date with all the new content being uploaded to Dailymotion, with staff picks and recommendations to help you to discover new things. You ca n watch some things in 4K, share and follow your favourite content, manage your own Dailymotion channel, and even stream live content. [Free]

10Calc: [17]  All phones have a calculator built-in, but they are pretty basic offerings. If you want to go beyond that, then you should check out 10Calc. In addition to having both basic and scientific calculators, 10Calc has a unit converter, a programmer's calculator, and an Unorthodox calculator for things like bill splitting and such-like. [Free]

Perfect Tube: [18]  This is a YouTube app designed specifically for Windows Phone, and lets you take care of pretty much every YouTube-based business you require. Subscriptions, recommendations, and so on. It's all there. There's even a mini player so you can watch content while you do other things. [Free]

Feed Lab: [19]  Windows Phone is very well known for the whole lack of first-party apps shabang, but thankfully there are plenty of third party devs who work tirelessly to give everyone the services they need. Feed Lab is the latest example, functioning as a third-party Feedly client for you to store all your RSS feeds for easy viewing. [Free]
